McGuireWoods attorneys in Charlotte recently participated in the Mecklenburg County Bar Diversity & Inclusion Committee’s Lunch with a Lawyer (LwL) mentoring program. Counsel Tanisha R. Reed and associates Heryka Knoespel and Luis Benavides volunteered throughout the school year to mentor middle-school students.
LwL is designed to educate eighth-grade students from diverse backgrounds — racially, ethnically and socioeconomically — about the different aspects of the legal profession and to provide an additional positive role model for each student. Over the course of the school year, mentors bring lunch to their students’ schools at least once a month, and foster and sustain meaningful relationships with their mentees. Conversations and time spent together focus on more than what it means to be a lawyer. The mentor-mentee relationships are designed to help students learn about future opportunities they may not have previously considered.
